Janine Gray Orthoptists

Janine is a Senior Orthoptist, who has been practising for the last 35 years, having qualified in 1989 from the Welsh School of Orthoptics in Cardiff. She started her career at Moorfields Eye Hospital where she worked for 16 years, being instrumental in setting up the first outreach clinic at Northwick Park Hospital. She also worked in Harley Street for 5 years before starting her family in 1997. For the last 22 years, Janine has had orthoptic clinics at the Clementine Churchill Hospital in Harrow and Spire Harpenden. She also has joint clinics with consultant ophthalmologists which allows patients to have a full orthoptic and ocular examination, diagnosis and treatment plan all on the same day. Janine is delighted to also be seeing patients at Visio. In January 2021, Janine returned to the NHS in Barnet for a maternity cover as acting Head orthoptist and has continued to work there as Deputy Head orthoptist from January 2023. She is the Lead clinical tutor in her NHS post supervising undergraduate orthoptic students on their clinical placements teaching them their practical skills. Janine also runs a vision screening service in private schools in Hertfordshire, Middlesex and North London detecting visual problems and squints in children aged between 4-7 years old. Janine specialises in assessment and treatment of adult and childhood squints, reduced vision (amblyopia) in 1 or both eyes needing treatment with patching and/or glasses, convergence insufficiency needing treatment with exercises and assessment of double vision resulting from injury or neurological causes with treatment by prisms. She also specialises in seeing children with neurological conditions or developmental delay. Janine regularly performs visual field assessments for glaucoma and the DVLA. Janine enjoys working with patients of all ages and is committed to providing the highest standard of care with patient satisfaction being of utmost importance to her. She works closely with ophthalmologists, optometrists, neurologists, paediatricians, ENT specialists and endocrinologists with patients being referred from a wide area including London, Hertfordshire, Essex, Buckinghamshire, Middlesex, Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Wiltshire and even Yorkshire.

Dr Minak Bhalla is a kind, compassionate, and highly skilled Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in glaucoma and cataract surgery. Based at the Royal Free Hospital in London, he is building a strong reputation within the glaucoma community for his clinical expertise and patient-centred approach.

He completed a two-year Glaucoma Surgical Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital under the mentorship of world-renowned glaucoma surgeons. As the senior lead fellow, he gained extensive experience in complex glaucoma and cataract surgery, developing particular expertise in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), trabeculectomy, PreserFlo MicroShunt, and tube implants including the PAUL and Baerveldt tubes.

Dr Bhalla trained in the prestigious North London Ophthalmology Deanery, with the majority of his residency based at leading centres including Moorfields and the Western Eye Hospital, where he was appointed Chief Resident. His achievements during his residency included national awards, notably for research presented at the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress and UKISCRS. He has authored chapters in a leading ophthalmology textbook and led the development of an educational ophthalmology app to support resident training.

Teaching and mentorship have always been a priority throughout his career. As a fellow at Moorfields, he was closely involved in teaching junior colleagues and continues to support both local and national training programmes as well as those training for their FRCOphth consultant exams. He remains committed to nurturing the next generation of surgeons through educational initiatives and mentoring.

Dr Bhalla is also involved in global eye health and postgraduate education. He co-leads the Global Education & Research Organisation’s (GERSO) postgraduate programme and has helped develop a glaucoma surgical training project in West Africa in collaboration with UCL and international partners. His research has been presented at several national and international meetings, where he is occasionally invited to speak.

Dr Bhalla’s patient-centred approach is at the heart of his practice. Known for his clear communication, warmth, and attention to detail, he builds lasting relationships with his patients based on trust and mutual respect. He has developed patient information leaflets and resources to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their care.

Outside of clinical practice, Dr Bhalla is involved in charitable work, having raised over £25,000 for causes in the UK and abroad. He has volunteered at outreach eye camps in Cambodia and supports local community work helping vulnerable members of the community.

Beyond medicine, he enjoys sport and fitness. He played football competitively at school and university, is a regular tennis player and LTA member, and has completed off-road running endurance events. He is also the founder of a local cricket club, which continues to bring together friends and community members.

Dr Bhalla’s clinical interests include:
• Surgical innovations for glaucoma, including the Hydrus Microstent, iStent, PreserFlo MicroShunt, and PAUL Glaucoma Implant
• Laser treatments for glaucoma, including selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), laser iridotomy and cyclodiode
• Cataract surgery in glaucoma patients, with or without MIGS procedures
• Surgical training and mentorship, including national and international teaching
• Global ophthalmology and equitable access to eye care

Cordelia McKechnie FRCOphth, MBBS, BScHons, PGDip MEd Director for Clinical Governance

Miss Cordelia McKechnie is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, and cataract surgery. She provides comprehensive care for a wide range of retinal conditions and is known for her meticulous surgical skill, clear communication, and compassionate patient‑centred approach.

Clinical Expertise:

Cordelia performs the full spectrum of vitreoretinal surgery, with particular expertise in:

Macular holes
Epiretinal membranes
Retinal detachments
Scleral‑fixated intraocular lenses
Surgical management of diabetic eye disease

She also offers high‑quality cataract surgery, including access to premium intraocular lenses where clinically appropriate.

Cordelia has undertaken a year‑long leadership programme and has held senior roles within hospital governance. She currently serves as Governance Lead at Whipps Cross Hospital, bringing strong organisational, analytical, and team‑building skills to her clinical and managerial work.

Medical Education: Published three abstracts and completed an MA dissertation titled “The Effect of Institutional Power Structures on Local Feedback from Medical Training Programmes for Postgraduate Doctors.”
