Wrinkle relaxing
Facial expressions cause muscles to contract and lines and shadows to appear in our skin also known as ‘dynamic wrinkles’.
As our skin loses elasticity, these lines become increasingly visible when the muscle is contracting and are seen at rest also known as ‘static wrinkles’.
Anti-wrinkle injections contain a protein which binds to the nerves that control muscle contraction resulting in temporary inhibition of the contraction of that muscle. Some of the most common areas that are controlled by muscle contraction enabling various expressions of the face are the forehead, space between eyebrows, around the eyes and the mouth.
What can I expect following anti-wrinkle injections?
Bruising and redness may occur and it is best to avoid touching the skin for 24 hours. Vigorous exercise, sauna and swimming are also best avoided for 24 hours. A mild discomfort may be felt for which Paracetamol can be taken.
What are the risks of wrinkle relaxing injections?
- Pain, bruising, bleeding (common)
- Inflammation (rare)
- Infection (rare)
- Local or systemic migration of anti-wrinkle injection (rare)
- Droopiness of the eyelid (rare)
How long does the treatment last?
An anti-wrinkle injection in the upper face lasts between 3 – 4 months. With repeated anti-wrinkle injections, muscle reconditioning and weakening of the treated muscles and strengthening of the opposing muscles means less treatments are required. Therefore, by inhibiting the action of certain muscles, both dynamic and static, wrinkles can be prevented.
