Acne or acne scars

Acne affects the lives of millions of people in the UK and across the world.

Acne can be treated with creams and local applications, but for the more advanced cases a treatment that targets the problem at its source is required. Acne scar treatment clinics now also use IPL to treat acne. IPL has revolutionised the approach to acne treatment and is considered to be very effective. Acne can cause stress and can also affect your mental health.

What causes acne?

Acne is caused by the blockage of hair follicles in the skin. These are tiny pores in the skin where hair grow and are called hair follicles. Immediately beneath the skin are sebaceous glands which are attached to these hair follicles. These glands secrete oily fluid (sebum) which helps to lubricate the skin and hair on the skin. Acne usually starts at puberty. During periods of increased hormone secretion such as puberty, pregnancy and the menstrual cycle in women, there is an increased production of sebum by the glands which blocks the hair follicles causing acne.

What are the symptoms of acne?

Acne spots appear on the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back. The plugged sweat pore or hair follicle can cause various forms of acne.

Blackheads are dark or black coloured small spots of acne found on the skin. The black colour is a result of pigmentation in the inner lining of the hair follicle.

Whiteheads are often white in colour but can also result for, blackheads that do not completely empty when picked or squeezed as the pore is closed.

Pustules are pimples that have white or yellowish pus filled heads and bulge out from the surface of the skin.

Nodular acne results from hard red lumps that are located beneath the skin’s surface and can be very painful. This is considered a more severe type of acne that will require a medical professional’s advice and treatment with oral medication to assist in controlling it.

Cystic acne is an uncommon and often painful condition. These are large, inflamed spots filled with pus that appear like boils which can form scars when squeezed.

The major complication of acne spots is damage to the surrounding skin tissues following bursting of the acne spots or when they are picked or squeezed forming scars. If left untreated, acne can lead to acne scars which can be more challenging to treat.

How does IPL treat acne?

Acne scar treatment clinics will use pulses of light energy directed at the affected areas of the skin to trigger a photoelectrochemical reaction that kills bacteria and reduces the severity of the acne. The treatment itself is extremely quick to carry out with no risk of adverse side effects.
