Aspiration of cysts and ganglia from wrist and hand joints
A cyst is a lump under the skin which can grow on any part of the body.
It can be filled with air, fluid, or pus. Most cysts are harmless and grow slowly but they can become infected in some cases. Cysts are more common in middle-aged females, if you suffer from acne, or if there is family history of cysts.
Ganglions can occur alongside any joint in the body but are most common on the wrists (particularly the back of the wrist), hands and fingers.
Ganglion cysts
Ganglion cysts usually form on the hands, wrists and fingers,
Baker’s cysts
Baker’s cysts usually form on the back of the knee and are fluid-filled.
Do I need cyst removal?
Ganglions cysts are usually harmless. However, they can sometimes be painful. If they do not cause any pain or discomfort, they can be left alone and may disappear without treatment, although this can take a number of years. Cyst removal treatment is usually only recommended if the cyst causes pain or affects the range of movement in a joint.
How is a ganglion cyst removed?
The two main treatment options for a ganglion cyst are:
- Draining fluid out of the cyst with a needle and syringe (aspiration)
- Surgical removal of the cyst (excision)
Is the procedure painful?
Cyst removal treatment occurs under a local anaesthetic which numbs the whole area so that you won’t feel any pain. The local anaesthetic might sting for a while when it first goes in. You may need to some pain relief for a few days following the procedure to manage any soreness.
