Injection of therapeutic substances into wrist and hand joints
Corticosteroid treatment is used to treat swollen or painful joints, which may be caused by an injury or arthritis.
The corticosteroid treatment is applied through injections directly into the joint. You may have a local anaesthetic by spray or injection to numb the skin first.
The joints often treated with corticosteroid injections are the shoulder, elbow, wrist, fingers, hip, knee, ankle and toes.
Corticosteroid treatment is also used to ease painful tendons and a condition called bursitis (when a fluid-filled sac that acts like a cushion between bones and tendons becomes inflamed).
A corticosteroid injection may also be used to relieve muscle pain in a specific area of the body.
