Photoaged skin
Sun spots, also known as ‘liver spots’, are dark pigmented areas that appear on lighter coloured skin due to ageing and sun exposure resulting in photoaged skin.
These patches are known as lentigines and are completely harmless but when they are present on the hands and face, they can create low self-esteem and affect confidence.
The pigment within lentigines absorbs more energy from intense pulsed light during IPL treatments than does the surrounding skin. As with thread veins, this causes very localised heating that disrupts the pigment molecules without affecting the normal skin immediately adjacent to the area of pigmentation. Their appearance can be made much less obvious with a series of IPL photoaged skin treatments. You might also notice that as the pore size in the skin shrinks, your skin becomes a little less oily, reducing the risk of spots, blackheads and whiteheads.
As the protein molecules that make up the pigments are broken apart, they are reabsorbed by the body, and the colour of the spot changes. With repeated photoaged skin treatments, the spot starts to blend in with the surrounding skin, becoming much less noticeable.
How does IPL work?
Intense Pulsed Light treatment (IPL) stimulates the lower skin layers, encouraging the fibroblasts there to produce more collagen to strengthen and plump the facial skin. This helps to improve the texture and elasticity of the skin, reducing wrinkles, shrinking pores and giving the skin a firmer, fresher look.
IPL can also be used to even out the irregular pigmentation on the skin that can arise from sun exposure over the years.
How is the IPL treatment done?
IPL therapy is normally straightforward. Our surgeons, nurses and practitioners are experienced and well trained in IPL. You will have a consultation with discussion regarding your therapy with a personalised plan suited to your needs. The smooth, glass surface of the IPL treatment head is applied to the area delivering precise pulses of light to the area being treated. Most patients can return to work immediately after treatment.
What are the risks?
You will be advised to wear protective eyewear during the course of treatment.
Does it hurt?
A local anaesthetic gel may be applied to the area but is not usually necessary. A cold gel is applied to the area being treated. IPL devices often have integrated cooling systems and therefore, the treatment is usually well tolerated. Some may find it akin to a sharp pinch. IPL treatments are relatively painless compared to other facial rejuvenation techniques.
What can I expect following treatment?
Photoaged skin treatment sessions usually last about 20 minutes each. Avoid exposure to the sun and apply Sunscreen SPF 30-50 every 2 hours for the next two weeks. You may have mild swelling, redness or crusting for up to 5 days after treatment.
How long does the treatment last?
A course of 4-6 sessions every 3-6 weeks may be necessary to achieve the desired results.
