Skin cancer

Skin cancer (melanoma and non-melanoma) when caught early is usually easily cured with treatment and this may often involve surgical removal.

The Dermatologists at our skin cancer clinic are trained to discuss all options including non-surgical options with you. We will find a solution that is personalised to your needs and will discuss strategies to help spot and prevent skin cancer in the future. Skin cancer requires early treatment to be successful. It is important not to delay if you have a changing mole or a new mole or blemish on your skin that you are uncertain about.

Will I need surgery for skin cancer?

The extent of skin surgery required will depend on the type of skin cancer, the area of the skin being treated, and the technique used. Smaller skin lesions can be straightforward and can be usually done in the clinic under a local anaesthetic whereas larger lesions may require admission to a hospital.

Which type of skin surgery will I require?

The choice of surgical technique will depend on several factors relating to your condition:

  • The size and location of the lesion
  • Whether the lesion is superficial or spread deeper
  • Whether the lesion is benign or malignant
  • Whether the surgery is part of your diagnosis or your treatment
  • The risk of scarring

Can skin cancer be prevented?

The best way to protect yourself from skin cancer is to minimise the time you expose your skin to the sun and to wear a high-SPF sunscreen and at least factor 15. Wearing clothes that cover up your skin, a hat, and sunglasses that protect you from UVA and UVB light can also reduce your risk. It is best to avoid using sunbeds or sunlamps.
