Spider naevi

Spider naevi are broken capillaries or blood vessels which often look like spidery red blotches or purple veins on the skin especially around the cheeks, eyes or the nose.

They are also known as thread veins or spider veins. They can appear anywhere on the body but occur more commonly the legs and face.

What causes spider naevi?

Spider veins rarely are a serious health problem, but they can leave people feeling self-conscious since thread vein in some occasion is more visible than line and wrinkles. These may be caused by the following:

  • Reverse blood flow
  • Hormonal changes
  • Exposure to the sun
  • Injuries

Can spider naevi be prevented?

Spider veins can be prevented by looking after your skin as it can be a sign of an impaired barrier. Protection from the sun can also prevent them from appearing.

How can spider naevi be treated?

Spider naevi treatment involves Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) which is very effective in treating spider naevi using uses high intensity bursts of visible light. It is a non-invasive and a non-surgical method used to treat visible red thread veins on arms and legs. The results are normally visible within a few days and continue for several weeks.

What are the risks of IPL treatment?

You will be advised to wear protective eyewear during the course of treatment.

Does it hurt?

A local anaesthetic gel may be applied to the area but is not usually necessary. A cold gel is applied to the area being treated. IPL devices often have integrated cooling systems and therefore, the treatment is usually well tolerated. Some may find it akin to a sharp pinch. Spider naevi treatment treatments are relatively painless compared to other facial rejuvenation techniques.

What can I expect following treatment?

IPL spider naevi treatment sessions usually last about 20 minutes each. Avoid exposure to the sun and apply Sunscreen SPF 30-50 every 2 hours for the next two weeks. You may have mild swelling, redness or crusting for up to 5 days after treatment

How long does the treatment last?

A course of 4-6 sessions may be necessary to achieve the best results. The skin may not look better immediately after the treatment and may take a few weeks to show the improvement.
