Telangiectasia

Telangiectasia is dilated or broken blood vessels that often appear as fine pink or red lines.

Healthy individuals can develop this condition and it is sometimes associated with varicose veins. They are usually harmless but can rarely be associated with several autoimmune diseases.

What causes telangiectasia?

  • Certain medications may give rise to telangiectasia. Sun exposed areas are mainly affected
    • vasodilators especially calcium channel blockers
    • long-term systemic corticosteroids
    • long-term topical corticosteroids including steroid rosacea
    • intralesional triamcinolone injections
  • Rosacea
  • Sun damaged and aged skin especially in those who smoke
  • Spider telangiectasia also known as spider naevus
  • Poikiloderma of Civatte (sun damage affecting the sides of the neck)
  • Pregnancy
  • Liver disease
  • Autoimmune conditions (scleroderma or systemic sclerosis, dermatomyositis and lupus)

How can telangiectasia be treated?

Broken blood vessel treatment involves using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)  in high intensity bursts of visible light. It is a non-invasive and a non-surgical method used to treat visible red thread veins on arms and legs. The results are normally visible within a few days and continue for several weeks.

What are the risks of IPL treatment?

You will be advised to wear protective eyewear during the course of treatment.

Does it hurt?

A local anaesthetic gel may be applied to the area but is not usually necessary. A cold gel is applied to the area being treated. IPL devices often have integrated cooling systems and therefore, the treatment is usually well tolerated. Some may find it akin to a sharp pinch. Broken blood vessel treatment is relatively painless compared to other facial rejuvenation techniques.

What can I expect following treatment?

Treatment sessions usually last about 20 minutes each. Avoid exposure to the sun and apply Sunscreen SPF 30-50 every 2 hours for the next two weeks. You may have mild swelling, redness or crusting for up to 5 days after treatment

How long does the treatment last?

A course of 4-6 sessions may be necessary to achieve the best results. The skin may not look better immediately after the treatment and may take a few weeks to show the improvement.
