Diabetic eye disease or retinopathy
What is diabetic retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the back of the eye (retina).
It can cause blindness if left undiagnosed and untreated.
Early signs of the condition can be picked up during a screening at at diabetes eye clinic.
What are the symptoms of diabetic retinopathy?
Some symptoms of retinopathy can include vision loss, shapes floating in your field of vision (floaters), blurred or patchy vision, eye pain or redness, difficulty seeing in the dark. However, not all of these will be direct symptoms of retinopathy and so it is recommended to get a screening at a diabetes eye clinic once a year.
Is it related to my diabetes?
There is evidence that strict control of diabetes will slow down the progression of retinopathy by nearly 50%. Therefore, it is important to liaise with your diabetologist at an AMD clinic, to optimise the HbA1c also known as glycated haemoglobin which is blood test indicating the average control of diabetes over the past 3-6 months.
How is diabetic retinopathy treated?
Treatment for retinopathy includes laser treatment, injections of medication into your eyes, or surgery in advanced diabetic retinopathy.
