Retinal vein occlusion

What is a retinal vein occlusion?

The retina is located at the back layer of the eye and is the light sensitive part of the eye.

The retina has blood vessels and when a blood clot forms in a retinal vein, it is called retinal vein occlusion. This causes the blood flow to stop or slow down creating water logging or fluid to build up in the retina leading to vision loss.

What are the risk factors?

  • It can occur due to pressure on the vein
  • high pressure in the eye
  • conditions that can slow down the flow of blood
  • conditions that make the blood thick
  • inflammation in the eye

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms include a sudden change in vision or visual loss. The reason leaking out of the blood and protein into the retina leading to fluid collection in the retina causing a retinal swelling which is also known as macular oedema. There is also a lack of oxygen in the surrounding areas of the retina which can also affect the vision.

What RVO treatment options are available?

RVO treatment is available through intravitreal injections and laser treatments.

Intravitreal injections:

There are various types of injections available and include those that bind to a growth factor called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) or to the inflammatory proteins released during the retinal vein occlusion. These retinal vein occlusion treatment injections include:

  • Dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex)
  • Triamcinolone or Intracinol injections
  • Avastin injections
  • Lucentis injections
  • Eylea injections
  • Vabysmo injections

Panretinal laser photocoagulation:

Abnormal new blood vessel growth also known as neovascularisation can occur due to lack of oxygen in the surrounding retinal tissues. These are formed due to a release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which results in the formation of new vessels that are not like normal blood vessels and bleed easily. Retinal vein occlusion laser treatment helps to reduce the production of VEGF and helps reduce this new vessel formation.
