Selective laser trabeculoplasty

What is SLT?

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a laser treatment for primary open angle glaucoma

It reduces the need to use multiple eye drops by allowing fluid inside the eye to drain effectively and therefore, able to maintain eye pressure within the normal range in 75-80% of people. SLT is effective in lowering pressure and lasts for up to 5 years.

How is Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty done?

Selective laser trabeculoplasty is conducted by placing a  small contact lens on the eye and it takes 15-20 minutes to complete the treatment.

    What are the risks?

Selective laser trabeculoplasty  may not be effective in 25% of people and alternative treatment such as surgery may need to be considered.

    Is the treatment painful?

Anaesthetic eyedrops are instilled to numb the eye prior to placing the contact lens and carrying out the laser treatment.

What can I expect following treatment?

You may get transient blurring of vision following the treatment and will be give anti-inflammatory eyedrops for about a week.

How long does the treatment last?

Selective laser trabeculoplasty is likely to last but usually requires repeating after 2-3 years
