Inner self / authenticity / intuition (‘The Heart’)
We are all walking around listening to a voice in our heads.
We think that the voice is ‘us’ because it constantly throws out thoughts all day, starting with ‘I’. “I can’t wait to go on holiday. I feel scared of this”. I, I, I. We fall into the trap of being bound by our thoughts and dictated by what is going on in our ‘monkey mind’; the verbal chatterbox.
When we live from this space, we feel small and constricted. We don’t go after the things we love and truly want in life. We play small and avoid. We succumb to fear and doubt. The ‘I’ is our mind-made identity, or the ego, as defined by psychology, particularly in psychoanalytic theory.
The ‘heart’ is where we let go of the ego and we tune in to what we truly want in life and experience the positive emotions that come with that. Love, freedom, fulfilment. It is the antidote to all problems in life. Imagine a world where everybody knew that they weren’t the voice in their head; that they were so much more. We would live in a far more compassionate, caring and loving world.
Different ways of experiencing the heart
Generally, meditation is a great way to connect to your heart.
Gratitude
Gratitude is probably the easiest and quickest way to experience the heart. Closing your eyes and visualising what you are grateful for and allowing yourself to really feel that emotion. Feel the love. This will put you into a heartfelt state. A similar way is by picturing somebody you love dearly.
Inner Self
This is the real ‘you’. The inner self is that silent, ever present part of your consciousness that has remained the same since you were a child. What is that part of you? Check in now. Observe the thoughts that come up. Who, or what, is observing those thoughts? That part of you that is observing, without noise or judgement, is the inner self. The real ‘you’.
Authenticity
Choosing to speak your truth, and stand up for yourself in a loving way, is a great way to experience the heart. Choose yourself regularly, set conscious boundaries, and expand your comfort zone by doing the things that scare your ego, but light up your emotions. These are sure-fire ways to experience the heart.
You know you are being authentic when you have zero doubt. You may have a lot of fear, but the heart never has any doubt. You know with certainty that the action you are about to do, is fully aligned with your values. It is simply the mind which stops us from taking these actions. You can feel when somebody is being authentic, simply from the way they talk, act and move through the world.
Intuition
Intuition is that quiet part of you that nudges you through life. It’s that gut feeling we all have. We used to listen to it all the time when we were children, but as we grew older, we developed thought and started listening more to the mind. Think about how many times you’ve ignored a gut feeling and it’s turned out to have been right all along.
Intuition guides you based upon the information received from the environment. Our rational minds receive and filter out a huge percentage of information. However, our intuition is able to process an incredible amount. 80% of our brain’s grey matter is dedicated to the intuitive mind, whereas only 20% is dedicated to the rational mind.
Listening to your intuition takes you out of your mind and puts you more in touch with the silent intuitive part of you. This is a great space to be in to tune in to your heart. To start listening to your intuition more, a great exercise to do is to first calm the mind. Then go for a walk, and listen to your body. Feel which way it wants to move, and follow that. Do not listen to your thoughts or your mind.
