Laser peripheral iridotomy for glaucoma
What is Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI)?
Laser treatment for glaucoma is used in cases of narrow angle glaucoma. Laser peripheral iridotomy allows fluid inside the eye to drain effectively and therefore, able to lower eye pressure to within the normal range.
How is the treatment done?
Laser eye treatment for glaucoma involves placing a small contact lens on the eye and it takes 15-20 minutes to complete the treatment.
What are the risks?
Laser peripheral iridotomy may not be effective in 5% of people and alternative treatment such as surgery may need to be considered. YAG peripheral iridotomy laser treatment may have a small risk of experiencing glare or visual disturbance due to light permeating through the laser hole in 1:200 cases but can be minimised by selecting the location well away from the central area of vision.
Is it painful?
Anaesthetic eye drops are instilled to numb the eye prior to placing the contact lens and carrying out laser peripheral iridotomy.
What can I expect following treatment?
You may get transient blurring of vision following laser peripheral iridotomy and will be give anti-inflammatory eye drops for about 1-2 weeks.
How long does the treatment last?
Laser peripheral iridotomy is likely to last for a prolonged period of time unless other factors affect the narrow angle glaucoma like a cataract which may require removal to improve drainage of the angle.
